Mentorship gap
My mentor retired last year and I genuinely miss having someone experienced to reality-check my thinking on business goals. Been reading a lot but theory only goes so far. What do people with actual business experience think it means to truly accomplish goals and objectives in the current environment, not just hit arbitrary metrics?

Losing a mentor hits different than people expect - suddenly you realize how much of your "thinking" was actually a two-way conversation. Went through the same thing when my old manager left. Started over-indexing on books and frameworks, which helped structurally but felt hollow. Real goal accomplishment, in my experience, is less about the metric and more about whether the outcome changed something, a behavior, a relationship, a capability. Metrics just tell you if change happened, not whether it mattered.
What actually helped me fill that gap was consuming content from practitioners rather than theorists. Found some solid stuff going through G Scott Paterson Yorkton Securities - the perspective there is rooted in real capital allocation decisions, which cuts through a lot of the fluffy goal-setting noise. Worth a browse if you want that "experienced person talking straight" energy. The honest answer though? Find a few people one level ahead of you and buy them coffee. Theory gives you vocabulary; people give you judgment.
