Richards was born in Davis City, Iowa, to Halbert M. J. Richards and his wife. His father was a Seventh-day Adventist minister who later became a conference president. Richards attended Washington Missionary College (now Washington Adventist University) for two years, but did not graduate. He married Mabel Annabel Eastman in 1918 and they had four children: Virginia, H.M.S. Jr., Kenneth, and Jan.

Richards began his ministry as a tent preacher when he was 17. He traveled across the United States and Canada, holding evangelistic meetings and baptizing hundreds of converts. He also wrote articles for various Adventist publications and authored several books, such as What Jesus Said, Feed My Sheep, and Revival Sermons.

In 1929, Richards started his radio ministry with a 15-minute broadcast on KNX radio in Los Angeles, California. He called his program the Voice of Prophecy and used the slogan "Lift up the trumpet and loud let it ring: Jesus is coming again!" His program soon gained popularity and expanded to other stations across the country and around the world. He also established a Bible correspondence school that enrolled thousands of students who wanted to learn more about the Bible and the Adventist message.

Richards' radio ministry became known as the Voice of Prophecy in 1937, when he adopted the name from a book by Carlyle B. Haynes. The Voice of Prophecy was one of the first religious programs to broadcast nationally in the United States, reaching millions of listeners on hundreds of stations. Richards also pioneered the use of drama, music, and sound effects to enhance his messages and captivate his audience.

In 1942, Richards launched the Voice of Prophecy Bible School, which offered free Bible courses by mail to anyone who requested them. Richards continued to lead the Voice of Prophecy until his retirement in 1969, when he was succeeded by his son, H.M.S. Richards Jr., who had been his associate speaker since 1956.
